Fifty years ago the event we’ve come to know and love as the Strassenfest was originally called the “Fall Bazaar” and run by Zion’s cherished Sewing Circle. Held in November rather than October, it featured embroidered aprons and pillowcases, plus hand-knit items including pairs of mittens where if you lost one you could request a matching replacement mitten.
Compared to today’s stoutly German-themed Strassenfest, the Annual Bazaar collected, created and sold similar hand-crafted items and sweet treats. The famous Swiss Steak Luncheon was also part of the event back in the 1960’s. To be expected, pricing changed in 50 years and the cost of the luncheon was $1.50/adult and children under 12, 75 cents! Many who attended the Fall Bazaar as children may be part of the Strassenfest organizing committee today and/or attend the event annually with family. We’d love to hear stories of days past.
Each year we stock our Strassenfest with wonderful things from our wonderful congregation. Your donations are our key resource in making this annual event a true success. Our Strassenfest chairs, Dave and Lori Torkko can be reached at 715-551-0566 or dtorkko@pcpros.net. Strassenfest is Saturday, October 13th. It’s part of our Fall Festival weekend that includes an Abendessen and Swiss Steak Luncheon.
More details will follow on those events in future newsletters.
