The Small Catechism simply and quite beautifully teaches all that one needs to know about Holy Communion for the Christian. Christ is truly present in His gifts, giving His body and blood in the bread and wine of Holy Communion.
“We believe, teach, and confess that Christ’s body and blood are received with the bread and wine, not only spiritually through faith, but also orally…in a supernatural, heavenly way, because of the sacramental union.” ~ Article VII, Formula of Concord: Epitome
“These words, “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,” show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.” ~ Small Catechism: Holy Communion, Part II
